Abstract

This study analyzes the Jong term effects of the labor force participation of 14and 15-year-olds. This early experience reveals persistent long-run effects on hours worked and wage rates as one ages. Gains associated \Vith work in one's early years, both in regard to later hours worked and wage rates, are strongest for blacks. While the possibility remains that work during the ages of 14-15 is largely an individual characteristic, this study clearly reveals that employment at these ages has no deleterious effect and in fact may ease one's permanent transition into the labor force.
